The Los Angeles School Police Department

The Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) is recognized as the largest independent school police department in the nation, with 262 sworn police officers, 55 non-sworn school safety officers (SSO), and 36 civilian support staff dedicated to serving the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), the second largest school district in the nation. LASPD is the fifth largest police department in Los Angeles County, and the 14th largest in California.

Unique to the LASPD team is the variety of assignments and services it delivers to its customers: the students and faculty at the schools, the employees of the LAUSD, and the communities in which the students live. Our Police Officers are assigned to communities of schools and patrol the surrounding areas. Our School Safety Officers are also assigned to support school traffic safety, parking enforcement and facility protection.

The LASPD also shares jurisdiction and interacts with over 13 municipal and county law enforcement agencies (to include multiple outside agency divisions and stations), as well as state and federal law enforcement and emergency services agencies.

The LASPD team is a progressive and forward-thinking organization who recognize the important role of keeping children and students safe. LASPD personnel concentrate their policing efforts on improving campus safety and creating safe school passages for students, staff, and the school community. The goal of the LASPD team is to address the quality-of-life issues that impact student safety and the ability of the students and staff to enjoy a safe learning environment free from the fear of crime. Our team is also committed to ensuring a safe school community as we partner with local municipal law enforcement agencies, residential and business communities, faith-based organizations, and various non-profit community-service organizations.

The Los Angeles School Police Department (LASPD) Government and Community Relations Engagement Unit is a highly visible proactive unit, representing the department and the Chief of Police to establish, build, and sustain relationships throughout the diverse communities we serve.

This unit also manages the department's social media platforms. Social media is a means for LAUSD community, students, staff, law enforcement agencies, and members of the media to inform themselves of department information and events. The team is a direct report to the Chief of Police, with a focus on community engagement, transparency, and partnerships with Department stakeholders.

In doing so, we collectively improve the quality of safety for all students, staff, administrators, parents and the school community.

Budget and Records Management Division is responsible for a host of LASPD administrative services, including data and crime analysis, citation processing, subpoena processing, payroll, time keeping, report requests, budget and finance and various other related functions. Budget and Records Management also oversees Civilian Staff assigned to the above-mentioned duties.

School Safety Officers

School Safety Officers provide additional safety services

A School Safety Officer (SSO) is a civilian non-armed employee of the Los Angeles School Police Department that receives additional training and equipment enabling them to provide support for school safety. In working with the School Police, the SSO’s learn much about the duties of the Los Angeles School Police Department and, as such, are a very helpful aid. Some SSO’s go on to become police officers, continuing to provide for the safety of teachers, students, and other staff members within the LAUSD. They also participate in conjunction with School Police Officers in such programs as holiday food drives, school supply giveaways, school dedications, and many other events.

School Safety Officers provide safety services for district locations, Adult Schools, Occupational Schools, and Skill Centers. In 2004, a Parking Enforcement Unit comprised of School Safety Officers was formed to provide improved traffic safety for Los Angeles Unified School District schools and other various facilities. The unit helps to educate drivers about the necessity of designated parking around schools. The Parking Enforcement Unit is also utilized to assist schools with traffic control and enforcement at such events as graduations, evacuation drills, and critical events.

LASPD Badge

1. Border design is based on the fasces - cylindrical bundles of wooden rods, tied tightly together, from which an axe protrudes. The fasces were an ancient Roman symbol of magisterial authority, but symbolized unity as well as power.

4. Replica of Los Angeles City High School. Los Angeles High, the first high school in Southern California, began classes on September 1, 1873. Classes were held in two rooms on the upper floor of Central Elementary School, which sits on a site now the Criminal Courts Building. On September 3, 1916, work began on the Los Angeles High School engraved on our badge. The school opened the following year, even without a gym, cafeteria, paved streets, or street cars within five blocks. The building stood tall until a devastating earthquake on February 9, 1971. The present-day Los Angeles High School was dedicated on June 4, 1977.

5. The Department Seal: Top left corner - the stars and stripes represent Los Angeles as an American city. The top right corner - the Bear Flag represents the California Republic of 1846. Bottom left corner - The LAUSD seal. Bottom right corner - Lady Justice, symbolizing the fair and equal administration of the law, without corruption, avarice, prejudice, or favor. Around the outside of the shield - olives, grapes, and oranges serve as reminders that Los Angeles is a garden community. The Rosary of the Seal represents the contributions of the Mission Padres in the early years of Los Angeles.
